Found in a wide array of sports, including football, cricket, netball, AFL, V8 Supercars, NRL and many others, chaplains are working alongside leagues all over Australia. As trusted volunteers they are serving their clubs free-of-charge, providing practical & spiritual care to team members.
ACS Personal Insurance is proud to support this organisastion as a charity partner. Sports Chaplaincy Australia (SCA) began in 1982, with the unique vision of a young Baptist Minister, Mark Tronson. From a small handful of chaplains in the 90’s there are now over 600 dedicated chaplains serving in Australian sports.
Clubs are discovering the value in having a person to care for their members and players during times of difficulty and stress. Sport Chaplaincy Australia has an emphasis on being respectful and non-judgemental, viewing each person as individual and unique. At times, all clubs have team members who experience hardship off the field, with illness, family breakdown, or other tragic circumstances. It’s at these times that the work of local chaplains becomes even more important, and these volunteers are often leading the community response to offer care and support.
As the need for caring individuals to support sporting clubs continues to grow, Sports Chaplaincy Australia is working to respond to requests for an additional 5,000 chaplains all over the nation. While chaplains receive the support of their local church, Sports Chaplaincy acts as a coordinating body between clubs, churches and volunteers. SCA also provides training, coaching and peer support, ensuring sports teams gain trained and equipped chaplains to serve their members.
Sport clubs play an essential role in Australian communities. SCA works with these clubs to help their communities grow even stronger and healthier.
